NCDAC Release Paths Statewide

NCDAC operates adult state prisons across North Carolina. An Edgecombe conviction identifies the county tied to the court case, not the location of the prison. After judgment, the Sheriff may transfer a person from the county Detention Center to NCDAC. That event ends the local jail stay but does not release the person from custody.

A later state event can be release to post-release supervision, parole in an eligible older-law case, another transfer, or final discharge. Post-release supervision is a required community period for covered prison terms. Parole is a conditional release process that now applies mainly to older cases and limited exceptions. Final discharge can occur after supervision ends. The record must be read for both prison departure and ongoing state status.

Search NCDAC Release Records

NCDAC provides two public routes. Offender Public Information is a person-based search covering current and historical state offenders, probationers, and parolees. The separate Inmate Release Search is an event report that can be filtered by county, year, and month or by name. Neither system contains ordinary Edgecombe County jail bookings.

1. Search by offender number when available. Otherwise use last and first name, then narrow the result with lawful identity fields.
2. Compare the offender number, name, birth information, county of conviction, sentence, and event dates before relying on a match.
3. Read the current status. Active Inmate means state prison; Active Probationer/Parolee means community supervision; Inactive requires review of the event history.
4. Inspect incarceration and release events for an actual past date and the stated release type. Do not treat a projected field as proof of departure.
5. Use the separate release report for the relevant month, then confirm any unclear result with NCDAC.

The official NCDAC offender search is the correct person lookup for adult state correction. A no-result can reflect spelling, intake delay, identity mismatch, or coverage. Recheck the offender number and do not infer release from absence.

NCDAC Search Fields Explained

The standard search allows name and offender-number queries, with filters that help distinguish similar people. The dedicated release report returns a smaller event-focused set. These verified fields make the statewide page fundamentally different from an Edgecombe jail inquiry.

The release report's Edgecombe county choice does not turn it into a Sheriff release list. It concerns state releases associated with that report field. It is neither a 24-hour nor 72-hour county-jail feed.

NCDAC Records and Contact

Use the public search before requesting clarification. NCDAC is the custodian for its adult offender record and can address state event or status errors. The Edgecombe Clerk holds the judgment from a county case. Sheriff Records holds the local jail departure or transfer entry. Each office should be asked for the record it created.

The statewide Community Supervision contact is not a prison locator desk and not an Edgecombe reporting office. Use the current NCDAC directory for the correct local field office. An older resource lists a Rocky Mount address, but the research marks it as historical and unsuitable for current reporting instructions without verification.

No Edgecombe State Prison

No current adult NCDAC prison was found in Edgecombe County. Fountain Correctional Center for Women closed in 2014, and the older Edgecombe Correctional Center is historical. Those names should not be presented as current places to call or visit. Historical state records remain with NCDAC.

This facility-map fact prevents two common mistakes. County of conviction is not the prison address, and an obsolete local facility name is not a current destination. Ask the Sheriff for the receiving agency after an Edgecombe transfer, then use NCDAC once state intake is recorded.

Edgecombe Facility History Boundary

Angle L begins with Edgecombe's active custody map. The main adult county jail has an official capacity of 255, and its courthouse Annex has 93. The separately run Youth Development Center has 44 beds and protected juvenile records. None is a current adult state prison. Keeping those operators and populations apart leads each inquiry to the right custodian.

The county jail may hold a sentenced person briefly before transport, but it does not become an NCDAC prison. Likewise, the youth center does not feed adult OPI. State prison placement can be anywhere in North Carolina, and its release trail belongs in the statewide system.

Read NCDAC Release Status

Active Inmate is an in-prison status. Active Probationer/Parolee directly indicates community supervision rather than active prison custody, but it does not prove full discharge. Inactive means formerly active and no longer active in the listed correctional role. It still requires review of the dates and event type.

A projected date can change because of court correction, prior custody time, multiple judgments, earned-time changes, disciplinary events, or another lawful event. North Carolina Structured Sentencing generally requires service of the minimum active term. The often-used 85-percent phrase cannot be applied as a flat formula to every sentence.

Note: A projected NCDAC date remains an estimate until an actual release event is recorded.

Verify NCDAC Discharge Evidence

For durable proof, match the offender number, inspect every active sentence, distinguish actual from projected dates, and check concurrent or consecutive judgments. Compare the NCDAC event with the filed judgment. If community supervision appears, determine whether its start reflects prison release and whether its later termination completes the sentence.

When a person recently left the Edgecombe jail after sentencing, first ask the Sheriff where transport went. Search OPI after intake. A short delay can occur before the state record becomes visible. Read State Release Calculations

North Carolina Structured Sentencing generally requires service of the minimum active term for covered offenses. Earned time can affect the maximum term but cannot reduce service below that minimum. The NCDAC explanation that the system requires 100 percent of the minimum and 85 percent of the maximum should not be restated as a promise that every person serves 85 percent of one number. Offense date, offense class, prior record, jail credit, multiple judgments, earned-time changes, and disciplinary events can all affect the calculation.

Prison release and sentence termination can also occur on different days. Covered people may leave confinement for post-release supervision, then remain under NCDAC authority in the community. OPI can show Active Probationer/Parolee during that period. An actual prison release date therefore establishes a past custody event, while a later supervision termination can mark the end of the remaining sentence component.

Recheck a projected value near the expected event. A revocation, corrected judgment, detainer, credit change, or new sentence can move it. If the public record conflicts with the filed judgment, ask NCDAC to explain its correction process. Preserve the exact label displayed, offender number, event type, and access date rather than estimating a date from a sentence formula.
