Federal Release Channels Differ
BOP holds and records people in federal prison sentences. The U.S. Marshals Service often handles federal defendants and prisoner transport before final prison placement. ICE has a separate detainee system. These are not three names for one database. A correct release search begins by finding the actual custodian and the stage of the case.
BOP's locator can show a person as released from BOP custody. That statement does not rule out federal supervised release, state or county custody, or ICE custody. USMS has no general public name locator like BOP. ICE's online locator has exact-match rules and a short recent-release scope. A no-result from any one system cannot be treated as proof that the person is free.
Search BOP Release Records
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. It accepts a BOP, DCDC, FBI, or INS number. A name search can also use race, age, and sex to narrow possible matches. Compare the register number and identity fields before relying on the result.
- Open the official locator and choose the number or name search that fits the information available.
- Enter the federal identifier when known. Otherwise use the full name and permitted filters.
- Compare name, register number, age, race, and sex to avoid a same-name error.
- Read location and release-date wording together. A future date is projected, while “IN TRANSIT” is not release.
- If the result shows a past date, no facility, and “RELEASED,” treat it as departure from BOP custody only.
The BOP Inmate Locator is not a county-jail roster and does not cover every federal defendant at every stage. Pre-1982 records may require archival research. A federal docket can help show the judgment and later supervision terms, while the responsible custodian confirms physical status.
The official BOP locator shows the released-result format used for federal custody.

The displayed release date still needs a federal court and other-custodian check when supervision or a hold may follow.
Read a BOP Release Result
BOP result fields describe federal prison custody. Preserve the displayed status and date instead of converting every result into a claim of complete discharge. Supervised release is a court-ordered community period after imprisonment and can continue after BOP confinement ends.
| BOP field or term | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Register number | Federal identifier used to confirm the correct person |
| Location | Reported BOP facility or status context |
| Future release date | Projected date, subject to change |
| Past date plus RELEASED | No longer in BOP custody on that date |
| IN TRANSIT | Movement within custody, not release |
| No result | Not proof of release, due to scope, spelling, stage, or identity issues |
A past BOP release can coexist with another government's custody. Check the federal case for supervised-release terms. If an Edgecombe or North Carolina hold was expected, ask that custodian directly rather than assuming the federal result answers every custody question.
Federal Records and Contacts
No local federal facility contact card can be supplied because research found no current BOP, ICE, or federal detention facility in Edgecombe County. The correct contact depends on the custodian. BOP uses its national locator and records channels. ICE provides a detainee locator and information line. USMS prisoner records may require a focused request, subject to privacy and law-enforcement limits.

Federal custody scope
BOP: sentenced federal custody and release history
USMS: federal defendants, transport, and prisoner custody
ICE: immigration detention and recent release coverage
For an Edgecombe jail departure, call Detention at 252-641-7921 and ask which agency accepted custody. A destination or receiving-agency name is far more useful than a generic claim of “federal hold.” The agency record and federal court file can then be matched to the same person.
ICE Release Search Limits
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System accepts an exact nine-digit A-number plus country of birth, or an exact biographical name plus country of birth. Date of birth can refine the name search. People under 18 are excluded from the public system. The researched ICE resource says current custody and releases within the last 60 days are covered.
That short window is not a permanent release archive. A missing result can reflect spelling, hyphenation, country-of-birth entry, A-number format, age, system lag, or the passage of time. Recheck the exact data and call the information line when appropriate. Never convert a blank screen into a claim of release.
Note: ICE's recent-release scope is limited, so a blank exact-match search cannot establish community release.
- A-number
- A federal immigration identifier that must be entered in the required nine-digit form.
- Detainer
- A legal request or basis that can route someone from local release into another agency's custody.
- Transfer
- Movement to a receiving custodian, not release to the community.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered community period that may follow imprisonment.
No Edgecombe Federal Facility
No current federal detention facility, ICE detention facility, or county ICE detention contract was verified in Edgecombe County. This absence matters because directory pages can assign a federal label to a local jail or recycle addresses without proof. The Edgecombe Detention Center and Annex remain Sheriff-operated county facilities even when they temporarily hold someone for another authority.
A local federal connection may still exist through a hold, transport, court case, or later prison sentence elsewhere. Ask who had physical custody at each stage. Then use that agency's record rather than searching for a nonexistent Edgecombe federal building.
Edgecombe Facility Map History
Angle L gives useful local context. Edgecombe's active adult county detention system consists of the 255-capacity main jail and 93-capacity courthouse Annex. Its 44-bed Youth Development Center is a separate juvenile operation with confidential records. No current adult state prison or federal facility was verified in the county.
This map prevents a transfer from being mislabeled. A person can leave the main jail for the Annex, state intake, USMS transport, or ICE custody without entering the community. Historical local state-facility names are not current federal destinations. Verify the exact receiving custodian every time.
Verify USMS Custody Changes
USMS has no general public person locator equivalent to BOP. Federal court dockets and later BOP records are often more useful. A narrowly described USMS Freedom of Information Act request may seek prisoner records, but exemptions can limit disclosure. Provide the full name, federal case number, date range, and specific record sought.
When the Sheriff reports transfer to USMS, preserve the Edgecombe release or transfer entry. It proves the county episode ended and identifies the next custodian. It does not prove BOP intake on the same date. Transport and court processing may occur first. The Edgecombe County release search provides the local record steps that should be completed before following the federal trail.
Reconcile Federal Release Evidence
Start with the custodian that physically held the person. Obtain its departure or transfer entry. Next, review the court authority. Then inspect the receiving agency or supervision system. Notification records and secondhand reports can support the timeline, but they should not replace the custodian's own record.
If BOP says RELEASED, note the date and check for supervised release or another hold. If ICE returns no result, recheck the exact-match fields and recent-release limit. If USMS is involved, use the federal case and a focused inquiry. These steps preserve the difference between leaving one facility and ending all custody.
Resolve Federal Date Conflicts
A county transfer time, federal court event, USMS transport entry, BOP admission, and BOP release date describe separate stages. They need not appear on the same day. If a person vanishes from local custody after a federal hold is executed, first obtain the Edgecombe destination field. The later BOP locator may remain blank while the person is in pretrial or transport custody, and that gap does not establish release.
For BOP history, preserve the register number and the locator's exact status. A past date paired with RELEASED establishes departure from BOP, while a future date remains projected. Review the federal judgment for supervised-release conditions. For ICE, preserve the search method and remember that the public locator excludes minors and uses a limited recent-release window. Exact spelling, country of birth, and A-number format can control whether a match appears.
When no public system resolves the timeline, ask the custodian for an existing record rather than a custom conclusion. A focused USMS request can name the person, federal case, date range, and document sought. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions may apply. Keep each response tied to its source so an Edgecombe transfer is not mistaken for a federal discharge.
Note: A federal transfer can end Edgecombe custody before any BOP locator record becomes visible.
